Membership of the British Geriatrics Society is open to:

  • Consultants in geriatric medicine
  • General practitioners
  • Psychiatrists with a special interest in elderly people
  • Consultants in allied specialties and community medicine
  • Junior doctors training for a career in geriatric medicine
  • Doctors working outside the UK who wish to establish and maintain professional links with British geriatric medicine
  • Scientists and other professionals holding higher degrees and who are engaged in research
  • Nurse consultants
  • The Society also welcomes applications from therapists, pharmacists and nurses whose membership is supported by two current members of the Society.

Benefits:

The membership subscription rate covers:

  • a subscription to the Age & Ageing journal (£271/$542/€407 on the open market) -This is open to membership categories 1-4 only
  • attendance of the Society’s two annual Scientific meetings at the discounted member's rate;
  • the right to attend and participate in Regional meetings;
  • and to contribute via their Regional and Council representatives to debates and decisions affecting local and national policy regarding the health care of older people in the UK.

Age and Ageing Journal
The Age & Ageing journal, published by Oxford University Press is the Society's official scientific journal. Membership of the BGS covers a subscription to the journal in addition to giving online access to past journals.

Subscription Rates*
A £20 discount applies to the rates below if the member pays by direct debit (not applicable to category 4). In other words, if a consultant pays by direct debit, the subscription would be £156 and is fully tax-deductible

Category 1 UK Consultants (Category 1)

Category 2

Trainees*, research fellows*, staff grade, associate specialists, part time consultants (who work less than 7 sessions per week) and clinical assistants in the UK

Category 3
General Practitioners, SHOs***, Retired members, Scientists, nurses, nurse consultants, therapists, pharmacists wishing to receive full benefits.

Category 4
Overseas Members - Doctors permanently resident outside the UK (including the Republic of Ireland)

Category 5
Retired members, nurses, therapists, nurse consultants, scientists and pharmacists (this category does not include a free subscription to Age and Ageing)

* In the case of the UK members, they will be moved to category 1 after five years of being a member of the Society. Where a member considers that he/she has grounds for believing that he/she should be kept on the lower rate, the member may appeal to the treasurer in writing requesting a review of the circumstances pertaining. Appeals need to be accompanied by a supporting letter from teh appellant's consultant, advising that he/she is still on the training grade.

***In the case of SHO's they will be moved to Category 2 after three years of being a member of the Society. Where a member considers that he/she has grounds for believing that he/she should be kept on category 3, the member may appeal to the Treasurer in writing requesting a review of the circumstances pertaining. Appeals need to be accompanied by a supporting letter from the appellant's consultant advising that he/she is still on the training grade

    Applicants need to be proposed and seconded for membership by two existing members of the Society. In the case of associates, this need not be a medical person. It may be colleagues within your profession who are members of the BGS.

    TO APPLY FOR MEMBERSHIP:

    Applications are considered and approved by the United Kingdom Management Committee every second month. In 2009, the UKMC meets on 22 Jan, 12 March, 21 May, 16 July, 10 Sept and 5 November .
