Multidisciplinary MSc, PG Dip, MRes or MPhil/PhD in Gerontology

Full time or part time

Institute of Gerontology
Kings College, London

MSc Gerontology
Postgraduate Diploma Gerontology
MRes Gerontology

MPhil / PhD Gerontology

The Institute of Gerontology at King’s College London runs an MSc Gerontology which can be taken full time or part time. Each year, most of our graduates are SpRs in Geriatric Medicine or Psychiatry who have successfully used their academic training days to complete the MSc over two years. Two of our 2007 graduates wrote an article for the BMJ about how useful the degree had been to them in their careers.

We are celebrating the 21st anniversary of the MSc Gerontology this year. To commemorate this, and to launch two new postgraduate degree programmes: MSc Global Ageing and MA Public Policy and Ageing, we are holding an event on the 3rd June 2008. The keynote address, ‘The Future of Research on Ageing’, will be given by Professor Alan Walker. This is an open event. We would be delighted if you could join us, and please do circulate this to anyone who might be interested.

See details of our MSc Gerontology, which is our degree of primary interest to doctors

Whilst many geriatricians in training no longer wish to pursue research, the MSc is an alternative method of providing additional academic training. As well as gaining a rounded understanding of ageing and old age, the dissertation is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their grasp of research methodologies and statistics, meaning they are well placed to understand and evaluate research in the future.

Holders of the Diploma of Geriatric Medicine are exempt from one third of the taught modules on the MSc Gerontology, making the MSc particularly attractive to those with the DGM.

If you would like to attend the open day or the anniversary event, or have any enquiries about the Institute or our programmes, please email Eirona Morgan
