Clincial Practice Evaluation Committee

Established by, and reporting to the BGS Academic and Research Committee, CPEC's remit is:

  • To receive requests from external organisations (e.g. NICE, CHI) and seek input as appropriate from members of the society, sections and Special Interest Groups (SIGs);
  • To disseminate HTA requests and make members aware of them;
  • To receive proposals from members of the Society or from SIGs, for multi-centre based audits and seek to initiate;
  • Develop proposals for guidelines/audit in the light of the national agenda and the interests of the Society;
  • Seek to establish sustained links with Trust clinical governance leads/audit leads for the health care of older people;
  • Identify training needs for clinical effectiveness and make proposals to the training Committee.
  • To promulgate clinical effectiveness relevant to older people,
  • Contribute to the Royal College of Physicians Guidelines Forum

Applying for CPEC support (financial, moral and expertise) for the development of a clinical guideline:

The BGS is particularly keen to support its membership and to encourage good practice by the development of robust, evidence-based clinical guidelines and to this end, with the permission of Simon Conroy, the CPEC commends to others wishing to lead on the development of guidelines, and wishing to secure BGS funding and support to do so, the proforma development plan (MS Word format) used by Simon when securing support for his initiative. In summary, the plan sets out:

  • The aim of the guideline
  • A list of previous related guidelines
  • Methodology (including composition of the guideline committee, scoping exercise, optional literature search, review and grading of evidence, methods for obtaining formal consensus)
  • Suggested format for the guidelines
  • Review process
  • Audit standards
  • Dissemination
  • Time planner
  • Costings.
