The Institute of Health Sciences at Reading was launched in 2005. Professor Gosney and Dr Oliver work part time for the University of Reading and part for the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. Margot's interests include cancer, nutrition and infection. She works closely with the School of Food Biosciences and recent joint funded areas of research include the manipulation of hospital diet and sip feeds to increase palatability and oral intake. This project incorporates work in both the community and the hospital and incorporates researchers such as Dr Lisa Methvan, Professor Don Mottrom, Dr Orla Kennedy, and Heston Blumenthal is also actively involved in this project.
In conjunction with Professor Christina Victor, Sam Nyman is studying the emotional support requirements of individuals with visual loss. This is funded by the Thomas Pocklington Trust and has already highlighted areas for further research.
David Oliver continues to focus his research interests on falls and fractures. His systematic review published in the BMJ in 2007 is still widely quoted. He has just completed a study on the efficacy and impact of community matrons in the West of Berkshire.
