Membership: open to all members of the BGS with an interest in medical ethics. There is no joining fee..
Objectives:
- To identify and co-ordinate interest and experience of ethical and legal aspects of medicine as they relate to older people.
- To facilitate the co-ordination and development of relevant research, and encourage the dissemination of knowledge of medical ethics and law.
The Ethics Special Interest Group seeks to provide a forum within the Society for constructive and informed debate on moral issues. The SIG has a role in several areas:
-
Theory: To contribute to theory and debate in medical ethics e.g. the role of ethics in medical training, the application of normative theory to medical dilemmas.
- Policy: To inform BGS policy on matters which have an ethical dimension e.g. consultation on privately funded drugs and NHS care.
- Practice: To engage all geriatricians in the relevance of applied ethics to their clinical practice e.g. debate on the ethics of restraint.
- To promote links with the other medical ethics interest groups via the UKCEN [UK clinical ethics network]
