‘Delirium: Evidence Update April 2012’ is the latest Evidence Update from NHS Evidence – a service provided by NICE. It focuses on a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline 103 ‘Delirium: diagnosis, prevention and management’ (2010).
Evidence Updates do not replace current accredited guidance. However, they do highlight new evidence that might generate a future change in practice and provide a commentary on the potential impact.
Evidence Updates from NHS Evidence seek to reduce the need for individuals, managers and commissioners to search for new evidence and to inform guidance developers of new evidence in their field. They also aid continuing professional development, policy development, service delivery planning and commissioning.
During the search and selection process 348 pieces of evidence were identified. Seventeen pieces of evidence have been chosen for publication. An Evidence Update Advisory Group, composed of subject experts, has reviewed the prioritised evidence.
Dr Jonathan Rohrer, Senior Clinical Research Associate, Dementia Research Centre, UCL Institute of Neurology, London said: “The new Evidence Update on delirium from NHS Evidence focuses on the most important and up-to-date evidence that has been published in the field. It will be of interest to anyone working with patients with delirium. This includes general physicians, geriatricians, psychiatrists and neurologists as well as nurses and other health care professionals.”

Evidence Updates will build over time to consider a number of topics and NHS Evidence welcomes feedback from societies and individuals in developing this service.
