Good Practice Guides

Formerly known as the compendium of good practice, good or best practice guides cover issues of governance in older people's care. May we also recommend our reference material which includes good practice and governance as well.

Clinical Guidelines

Clinical Guidelines are developed through a rigorous procedure of audit, literature search and peer review to improve the standards of diagnosis, treatment and management of specific diseases and conditions. This section has clinical guidelines developed by the BGS (usually in conjunction with other bodies), as well as listing other sources of clinical guidelines.

The BGS is regularly asked by the Dept of Health, official Government inquiries and other consulting bodies to comment on specific issues. The BGS's position on these issues is posted in this section.

Powerpoint Library

The BGS publishes, in pdf format, copies of powerpoint presentations delivered at its scientific meetings. Please note that we only publish presentations of those authors who authorise publication of their presentations. Presentations stay on the website for 2 years.

Press Releases and News

Reports in the media affecting health care professionals as well as BGS press releases

Reference Material

This section comprises an ever-growing selection of reference material on a variety of topics ranging from the history to geriatric medicine, ageing and demographics, governance and specific conditions affecting older people, incuding the ever popular papers written on incontinence, management of hip fracture etc.

BGS Scientific Meetings - Books of Abstracts

This archive consists of books of abstracts of work presented at BGS scientific meetings. Please note that posters presented at meetings undergo a peer review process at the meeting and any changes or withdrawals to the abstracts are not reflected in these books which are printed before the meeting. Final abstracts are published in Age & Ageing, subject to the assessors' approval.

Age & Ageing Journal

The BGS' official scientific journal, published by Oxford University Press, has international standing.

BGS Newsletter

The BGS publishes a newsletter, which is the main vehicle for communicating with the broader membership. It accepts articles from BGS members and from other experts in their field, including a consultant old age psychiatrist who write a regular column on laws and developments affecting services supporting older people with mental health issues.

The BGS, as part of its charitable activities, administers a number of grants, prizes and awards with a view to encouraging high quality research and furthering the professional development of professionals with an interest in older people's healthcare.

To our partner geriatrics associations in other countries; organisations supporting older people in the UK; and organisations supporting people with specific conditions such as the Alzheimer's and Diabetic Associations

Facts and Figures

This section of the BGS is a resource of various facts and figures which may be of interest to health professionals, older people, their carers and researchers in demographics and developments within the NHS
