Membership of the British Geriatrics Society is open to:

  • Consultants in geriatric medicine
  • General practitioners
  • Psychiatrists with a special interest in elderly people
  • Consultants in allied specialties and community medicine
  • Junior doctors training for a career in geriatric medicine
  • Doctors working outside the UK who wish to establish and maintain professional links with British geriatric medicine
  • Scientists and other professionals holding higher degrees and who are engaged in research
  • Nurses and Nurse consultants
  • Medical Students

In November 2012, the BGS membership was comprised of:

1451 consultant physicians in care of the elderly (includes academic appointments and professors of geriatric medicine)

61 nurses, therapists, pharmacists and scientists with an interest in ageing and older people's care

159 GPs, Associate Specialists and Clinical Assistants (non-geriatrician medical practitioners), Foundation Year doctors

498 Trainee specialists in geriatric medicine and Non-career grade physicians (Staff and Associate Specialist Grade)

264 Overseas doctors

198 members who have retired from active practice

The British Geriatrics Society is a member of both the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society (EUGMS) and the International Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology
