On the 10th of October, at the Briar Court Hotel the BGS Yorkshire Branch held its meeting entitled: "Practical Medicine in Old Age - The 28th Symposium". It was attended by consultants and registrars from around the Yorkshire Area.

Dr Kate Granger is a third year Elderly Medicine Registrar who was diagnosed last year with a terminal malignancy. Despite being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive type of sarcoma she managed to write "The Other Side". Since writing this and stopping chemotherapy she has returned to working at Pinderfields Hospital in Yorkshire and now has written a further book about her experiences.

A bed usage survey in Sheffield PCT showed that 25% of admissions from care homes were avoidable. 40% of emergency admissions were exacerbations of long term condition (LTC).
Problems providing services to care home residents include:
• Over-reliance on emergency services for crisis management
