NIBGS response to the Compton Review

BRITISH GERIATRIC SOCIETY (NORTHERN IRELAND) RESPONSE TO “TRANSFORMING YOUR CARE – A REVIEW OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL IN NORTHERN IRELAND”  (THE COMPTON REVIEW)

The British Geriatric Society (BGS) seeks to promote better health and care for older people. The membership of the Northern Ireland Branch of the BGS is multidisciplinary with a members including nurses, therapists and doctors. It includes the vast majority of Consultants specialising in health care for older people within Northern Ireland.

Elder Abuse in Ireland

Research published this week in Age and Ageing, which looked at elder abuse in Ireland, has been covered by over 20 Irish media outlets.  The article Elder abuse and neglect in Ireland: results from a national prevalence survey indicates that elder abuse in Ireland affects over 10,000 people.  Many of the online and print media which have highlighted the findings from the study have also quoted Professor Des O'Neill warning that financial mistreatment, the most prevalent form of abuse, is often hardest to detect.
