Mandate from Government to NHS England (Apr 2015 - Mar 2016)

The Mandate provides strategic direction from the Government to the NHS which must (the Mandate says) be operationally independent and clinically-led. The Mandate for 2015-16 carries forward all objectives in the 2014/15 Mandate with the addition of objectives related to mental health and better integration of care across different sectors. The over-arching objectives set out in the mandate are: to prevent people from dying prematurely; to enhance quality of life of people with long-term conditions; to help people to recover from ill health or following injury; to treat and care for people in a safe environment and to protect them from avoidable harm; and to ensure that people have a positive experience of care.
