BGS Trustees and Honorary Officers

The BGS is governed by a Trustees Board which is responsible for the long term direction of the BGS, ensuring that it is solvent, well-run and delivering its charitable mission. The Trustee Board is comprised of nine officers including the BGS President and President-elect, national representatives for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and representatives from the following standing committees: the Trainees’ Council; and Finance, Fund Raising and Corporate Affairs. The BGS Honorary Secretary also sits on the Board, as do two lay trustees. The Chief Executive reports to the Board and attends all Board meetings.

The national representatives on the Trustee Board are nominated by BGS councils for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. These councils oversee health policy in their respective countries and enable the BGS to coordinate its activities and to provide its members with appropriate support.

Eileen Burns

President:
Eileen Burns: Dr Burns has been a geriatrician in Leeds since 1992 and was the clinical director of a large teaching hospital department from 1999 to 2011. She is currently clinical lead for integration in Leeds. 

 

President-Elect:
Professor Tahir Masud:
qualified in Oxford/St Bartholomew’s London and has been a consultant Geriatrician in Nottingham since 1994. He has clinical and research interests in falls, osteoporosis, exercise  and syncope. He also has an interest in medical education and was previously the BGS Vice President for Education and Training. He has also previously held the position of  President of the European Union of Medical Specialists- Geriatric Medicine Section.

Honorary Secretary:
Shane O'Hanlon:
Dr Shane O'Hanlon is a consultant in elderly care medicine at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. He has a special interest in oncogeriatrics and surgical liaison. He is also the digital media editor for the BGS.
Juanita Pascual Honorary Treasurer:
Juanita Pascual: Dr Juanita Pascual is a Consultant in General and Geriatric Medicine based in Lymington in the New Forest. She has a special interest in Falls and Syncope and has previously held the post of BGS Meetings Secretary. She has had number of management roles during her career and is currently Clinical Director for Integrated Community Services in Southern Health Foundation Trust.
Trainee Representative:
Kimberley Kok: Dr Kok is a South-East London specialty trainee in Geriatric and General Internal Medicine. As Chair of the Trainees' Council, she co-ordinates the activities of the trainees and represents all geriatrics trainees. She has a special interest in medical ethics and law.
  Representative of the Nurses and AHPs' Council:Cliff Kilgore is a graduate of Bournemouth University (1999). He has since undertaken a BSc Hons Advanced Nurse Practitioner and more recently an MA in in Advanced Practice. He works as a Consultant Nurse for Intermediate Care and Older People within Dorset Healthcare NHS Trust and he is also a Visiting Fellow to Bournemouth University. He has held several lead positions in healthcare and currently is a member of the Royal College of Nursing's Older People's Forum steering group and the Chair of the BGS Allied Healthcare Professionals and Nurses Council. He also is a member of the BGS Clinical Quality Steering Group.
National Council Chair - England:
Tun Aung: Dr Aung has been a a Consultant Geriatrician and Hon. Senior Lecturer in Hull Royal Infirmary. He led the development of Falls and Othogeriatric services in Hull. Currently his focus is on the frailty interventions around the ED and Elderly Assessment unit. He is dedicated to medical education and his formal and current roles in medical education include Specialty RCP tutor (Geriatric Medicine) Director of Clinical Studies (HYMS), Deputy- Director of Medical Education (HEY NHS Trust) and Training programme Director for Core Medical Trainees (North & East – HEYH). He also helps the RCP by carrying out the role of MRCP PACES examiner (national and international), PACES exam host, PACES exam chair, RCP associate regional Advisor and the JTCPTB AC vice chair.
National Council Chair: Northern Ireland
Mark Roberts: Dr Mark Vignesha Roberts MPH FRCP is a Consultant in Acute and Geriatric Medicine in Northern Ireland, having graduated at the University of Aberdeen in 2000.  His interests and postgraduate training include public health as well as quality improvement methods to improve the consistency and quality of health care.  He is keen to support high quality services for older people that respect autonomy, dignity and quality of life.

Christine McAlpine:Dr Christine McAlpine has been a Consultant Geriatrician and Stroke Physician in Glasgow Royal Infirmary since 2011. She was appointed a consultant in Stirling Royal Infirmary in 1987 and moved to Stobhill Hospital in 1997, moving again to GRI when it merged with Stobhill. She is the Specialty Adviser for Geriatric Medicine for the Chief Medical Officer in Scotland and the Lead Clinician for the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Stroke Managed Clinical Network. Read more

Jonathan Hewitt:
 Having previously been a consultant geriatrician in Portsmouth NHS Trust, and via a year's sabbatical at Glasgow University, Dr Hewitt is now a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Cardiff University and Honorary Consultant Geriatric and General Physician in Aneurin Bevin Health Board. His clinical responsibilities focus on general, Geriatric and stroke care. His research interests are in stroke and surgical epidemiology and the use of large datasets in research. He is also NISCHR research lead in Wales and member of the Research and Development Committee for the BGS. He was previously Vice Chairman of the Ethics and Governance Council of the UK Biobank. He is currently a member of the Ethics, Regulation and Public Involvement Committee of the MRC and the Chairman of the Cardiff School of Medicine Research Ethics Committee.
Lay Trustee
Susan Went:
 Susan is Director of Improvement for Eastern Academic Health Science Network and member of the national Patient Safety Programme Board. She is a Health Foundation Improvement Fellow and a freelance improvement consultant, with experience of designing and leading complex improvement programmes at national, regional and local level.  A background as an NHS clinician, service manager and executive director plus posts in Department of Health, the Medical Royal Colleges, and as Director of Evidence and Improvement at Healthcare Improvement Scotland, means Susan brings improvement expertise and extensive strategic and operational experience.
Lay Trustee
Caroline Macinnes: Caroline is currently the Chief Operating Officer for Barclays UK Chief Financial Officer, supporting the Finance Leadership Team in achieving the Company’s key strategy objectives. Caroline started off her career by training at PWC and qualifying as a Chartered Accountant before moving into the Banking sector.  She has over 15 years experience in Financial Services industry, at Societé Generale and UBS and finally Barclays. She has held a number of senior business leadership, financial, as well as risk management positions.  Caroline has extensive experience of developing, implementing and leading Enterprise risk management frameworks and associated controls and governance functions within a number of global organisations.

Dr Christine McAlpine - Chair, BGS Scotland Council

Dr Christine McAlpine has been a Consultant Geriatrician and Stroke Physician in Glasgow Royal Infirmary since 2011. She was appointed a consultant in Stirling Royal Infirmary in 1987 and moved to Stobhill Hospital in 1997, moving again to GRI when it merged with Stobhill. She is the Specialty Adviser for Geriatric Medicine for the Chief Medical Officer in Scotland and the Lead Clinician for the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Stroke Managed Clinical Network. Her research interests are in stroke disease and she is actively involved in local stroke service developments. She is involved with stroke at a national level via the Scottish Stroke Care audit; she is a member of its steering and report writing groups and chairs the SSCA stroke rehabilitation subgroup. She has been involved from the start with the Older People in Acute Care national programme in Scotland to improve awareness and care for older patients especially in the areas of frailty and delirium and chaired the group which updated the Healthcare Improvement Scotland acute hospital care standards for older people in, published June 2015.  She was elected Chair of the BGS Scotland Council in April 2016.
