Blog and Communications Adviser

Help shape the online content of both the BGS and our journal, Age and Ageing.

If you follow us on social media and read our blogs, you might have noticed that the content can get a little clinical at times. That’s where you come in. The BGS staff have many skills (we’d like to think), but we are not clinicians. We need to make sure that what we publish is accurate, so at times we need someone to review and edit our content from a clinical perspective (you!).

Cool. Tell me more.
You’d work with the BGS comms team and the Age and Ageing Editorial Manager to check clinical information contained in blogs. Using your professional knowledge of geriatric medicine, you’d be able to verify that assertions contained in BGS or Age and Ageing blogs are accurate and in line with good clinical practice. There would be scope for you to commission content yourself, as well as to get involved in the BGS and Age and Ageing social media accounts, should that be an area you’re interested in.

The role opens up the opportunity to become a member of the Editorial Board of our international clinical journal, Age and Ageing (great for a researcher), and/or the BGS Policy and Communications Committee (great for a clinician), either of which would bring you into important networks and activities, and look good on the CV.

Did we mention you’ll get CPD points?

I’m not sure I have time for this…
You’re busy, we understand that. That’s why we want to assure you this voluntary role will not require a heavy time commitment from you.
On average, it would take up 1-2 hours a week of your time, with some weeks being a little lighter. Nothing would be required from you out of hours. There are not usually pressing deadlines for publishing blogs, and we know other things will come up in your day job that you will have to prioritise.  Now and then, we will be glad of your quick response on some clinical content, but this won’t happen very often.

The role would be yours for 2 years, with support provided by our staff team, and the opportunity to get to know other BGS members who serve in leadership roles within the BGS.

You’ll be welcome to join our Policy Committee and Age and Ageing Editorial Board meetings, both of which are great opportunities to meet and work with inspirational leaders in the healthcare of older people and feed into the work we do, but you are not required to attend.  If we need you to attend other in-person meetings or conferences, we will cover your travel expenses and accommodation in line with our expenses policy.

Interested?
We want this role to complement your day job and enrich your professional journey. If you are a keen communicator and social media user, this would be a great opportunity to hone your skills and to contribute to the BGS’s mission of improving healthcare for older people.
The role would be suitable for geriatric medicine resident doctors at any stage of training, post-foundation. We also welcome applications from NAHPs with clinical experience in older people’s healthcare.
