Dr Eva Kalmus

GeriGPs Committee

Dr Eva Kalmus is an Interface Medicine GP at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust. She works with an integrated alliance covering primary, secondary, community and mental health services and social care seeking to address the needs of mostly older patients many of whom are also experiencing frailty as they move between different settings.

She has been a portfolio GP for 30 years with more recent roles providing medical input to patients in a community hospital, on a community and a virtual ward and piloting discharge to assess, pro-active anticipatory care planning and post-acute wards. She is currently supporting a multi-disciplinary hub aiming to facilitate discharge for patients who are not benefiting from acute unscheduled hospital admission and reduce inappropriate readmissions by contributing to a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment.

She was motivated to jointly set up the GeriGP group to provide mutual professional support to the increasing numbers of GPs working in non-traditional roles particularly around the health care issues arising from frailty, cognitive decline, multi-morbidity and the end of life phase. She has found a renewed enthusiasm for clinical work from the contact with other BGS members including the GPs at all stages of their careers.

Her other interests include how to develop a supportive working environment in the NHS to allow changes to evolve in a constructive, inclusive way for existing frontline staff. Outside work, she enjoys time with her grown up children, friends and developing fulfilling interests to gradually move towards real retirement but probably not anytime soon.
