I am a Consultant Geriatrician at Frimley Park Hospital, with interests in Global Public Health and the relationship between nature connectedness and health. I have gained experience in NHS quality improvement work, patient safety and the delivery of patient centred clinical care across a variety of roles in different NHS Trusts.
I believe that environmentally sustainable healthcare is also more socially responsible, financially efficient and clinically effective, delivering better outcomes and aligning more closely with the values and priorities of patients and their care providers.
The British Geriatrics Society has a vital role in the creating a more environmentally sustainable healthcare system, because evolving population demographics have increased the demand for health and social care by older people and simultaneously expanded the older population vulnerable to inequalities and environmental iatrogenic harms that arise inadvertently from health and social care provision.
Improvements in healthcare sustainability align synergistically with other key priorities around the adoption of new technologies, shifting the focus of care from hospitals to communities and the prevention of chronic diseases in later life.
