Dr Ruth Austin

Ruth

I am a ST4 trainee based in Yorkshire with a passion for improving the sustainability of older people’s healthcare and workforce wellbeing.

I graduated from Newcastle Medical School with a plan to pursue geriatric medicine from the beginning. Since then, I have chosen a varied route through training with experience working in Australia and from 2024-2025 held an education and leadership fellowship focussed on improving resident doctor wellbeing.

I believe that through practicing the core principles of person-centred care in geriatric medicine, we can make changes which positively impact both patients and our planet. For trainees, looking at sustainability as part of quality improvement is a great way to get involved. For example, I led a project looking at outpatient IV iron pathways, reducing hospital visits and unnecessary blood tests. Considering the large workforce within geriatric medicine, I also see a need to consider and mitigate the impact of rising temperatures and changeable weather systems on our wellbeing at work.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with many experienced and enthusiastic professionals through the BGS sustainability committee.
