Dr Sarah True

Chair, Trainees Council
Sarah

Introduction

Dr Sarah True is the chair of the BGS Trainees Council and a specialty registrar in geriatric medicine in the West Midlands deanery. She describes her time as a registrar as a "slow burn" after spending two years as a teaching fellow alongside medical registrar duties before entering geriatric medicine higher specialty training in 2020. Since then she has had two periods of parental leave and now trains less than full time.

Sarah has been a member of the BGS Trainees Council in two roles previously. Initially she was the education and training representative overseeing the implementation of the new 2022 geriatric medicine higher specialty training curriculum. Since then she has also served as the workforce trainee representative.

In her day job she maintains a keen interest in medical education and is passionate about training for all members of the MDT that lead to improvements in the care of older people.

Reason for joining the BGS Trainee’s Council

I initially joined the BGS Trainees Council in 2020 as the representative for education and training with the aims of advocating for trainees when training had been impacted by covid-19 and also as we navigated the roll out of a new curriculum. As my term came to an end there was an opportunity to join the newly formed workforce committee as a trainee representative and this felt like a natural step to be the trainee voice in a new space.

Why trainees should get involved with the committee

Being involved with the BGS holds so many opportunities. By gaining an insight “behind the scenes” into how training is organised and developed it then allows the committee to make informed decisions about how to shape the future of our training. By getting involved in the committee you will meet people who share your passion for geriatric medicine and together you can work together to learn new skills and make changes that are important to you and your practice.
