GIRFT’s clinical fellowship programme is a development opportunity for NHS resident doctors at registrar level, non-consultant doctors, nurses and Allied Health Professionals (all groups) who wish to develop expertise in quality improvement, research, implementation and clinical leadership alongside their clinical practice.
Each year GIRFT partially fund a fellow's time based in an NHS trust to work on optimising clinical pathways. They have never previously had a geriatrician or specialist in older people as a clinical fellow, so now may be the opportunity.
GIRFT are also increasingly using their approach to support a high-quality, low-carbon healthcare service. The NHS has pledged to become net zero carbon by 2045. As well as many behind the scenes changes, this is going to require a large transformation of clinical services. Not only are older people some of those most at risk from climate breakdown, we need geriatricians to be involved in these transformations to maximise on opportunities to improve outcomes and ensure older people's health is prioritised throughout.
GIRFT's pioneering decarbonising clinical pathways programme, with current and past clinical fellows contributing to work including decarbonising the bladder cancer, hip replacement and acute psychosis pathways. Is there an opportunity in your trust and your area of specialist interest to benefit from GIRFTs methods and insights? Expressions of interest are currently welcomed for the 2027/2028 fellows.
