Congratulations to the winners of the BGS EAMA Awards!

24 November 2020

The European Academy for Medicine of Ageing is an advanced postgraduate course in geriatric medicine designed to inspire and develop future leaders in academic geriatrics and older people’s healthcare across Europe. It is a dynamic, collaborative multi-faceted course that runs over two years. The purpose of the course is to nurture geriatricians in European countries in academic excellence, provision of geriatric care, teaching and leadership.

As part of the Society’s grants and prizes offer, the BGS offers members the opportunity to apply for EAMA funding. This year's award winners are BGS members Mary NĂ Lochlainn and Dr. Carly Welch. The course starts in January 2021 and our successful candidates will be writing a report on their experience which will be published in the BGS Newsletter and on the BGS Blog

Dr Mary Ni Lochlainn commented:

"I have always hoped to be able to attend the prestigious EAMA, having heard so many positive reports from past attendees and those who have had teaching roles on the course. Currently, I am undertaking a PhD looking at the role of the gut microbiome in age-related muscle loss. This temporary step away from clinical practice feels like perfect timing to attend EAMA, which will expand my knowledge of the latest research and developments in the varied and ever-enthralling world of geriatric medicine. I am incredibly grateful to the BGS for this opportunity and look forward to feeding back about the experience.”

Dr Carly Welch commented:

"I am delighted to have been given this opportunity to attend the EAMA course starting in 2021! I'm currently undertaking a PhD in acute sarcopenia at the University of Birmingham and have been inspired by my supervisor (Dr Thomas Jackson) who previously attended this course during his own PhD studies. I've been fortunate in the roles I've had so far that I've been able to collaborate with trainees and academics in geriatric medicine across the UK, but I'm really excited to develop closer links with clinicians in geriatric medicine across Europe. I know that I will learn so much from this course that I can't even predict right now, and I will definitely be sharing this with all members of the BGS, to whom I am incredibly grateful for this support!”
