Dr Alasdair MacRae is a consultant geriatrician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and also holds the position of Secretary of the BGS Bowel and Bladder Health SIG, Chair of the Falls and Bone Health SIG and BGS Meetings Secretary.
The British Geriatrics Society Bowel and Bladder Health Special Interest Group (SIG) is delighted to have been invited to organise a session at the 33rd United Kingdom Continence Society (UKCS) Annual Scientific Meeting, taking place at the Technology and Innovation Centre, Glasgow, from 21-23 April 2027.
The conference theme is "Back Tae the Future", tipping its tartan bonnet to the iconic 1985 film and the meeting's Glasgow home. For the BGS session, we’ve chosen to focus on the management of nocturia in older adults with frailty, exploring the evidence and emerging approaches to assessment and care. More than 40 years after Marty McFly time travelled, there is still much to learn about nocturia and how best to tackle it.
Nocturia doesn't belong to one specialty alone. Its consequences extend far beyond the bladder, with implications for sleep, falls, frailty and quality of life. That's why our session will bring together expertise from across disciplines, because the best outcomes are achieved when we work together. Call it multidisciplinary care, call it the power of love — either way, collaboration remains the key to changing the future for our patients.
Our session will begin with a specialist presentation exploring the evidence and emerging approaches to the assessment and management of nocturia in older adults with frailty. But that's only the beginning.
Following the presentation, we'll harness enough energy to power a flux capacitor with an interactive multidisciplinary panel discussion centred around a clinical case. Expect lively debate, practical insights and plenty of opportunities for audience participation. Bring your questions, your experience and perhaps your own perspectives for managing nocturia as we explore the challenges and opportunities together.
Great Scott! UKCS always showcases innovation and excellence in continence care, and UKCS 2027 will be no exception. Abstract submissions will open soon, and we encourage colleagues from geriatrics, urology, nursing, physiotherapy, primary care and the wider multidisciplinary team to share their work. Research, quality improvement projects, service developments and educational initiatives are all welcome. The deadline for abstract submission is January 2027, so now is the perfect time to set your time circuits.
We look forward to welcoming colleagues from across the UK and beyond to Glasgow, and to hearing about the latest research, quality improvement projects and innovations in continence care.
As Doc Brown reminds us, "Your future hasn't been written yet. No one's has. Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one."
