What to Expect at the BGS POPS Meeting 2025

Date

Dr Stephanie Wells is a Consultant Geriatrician working at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. Since 2023, she has co-ordinated a perioperative liaison service for the South-East Wales Vascular Network.

After the success of last year's meeting in Liverpool, we are excited to welcome you to London for this year’s BGS POPS conference.

This year, the POPS SIG and the Cardiovascular Health SIG meetings will run on consecutive days at the Wellcome Collection. With this in mind, we have designed our programme with a broadly cardiovascular theme in mind. If you are able to, we would really encourage you to consider attending both meetings!

The management of patients with aortic stenosis in any perioperative context can be anxiety provoking! Dr Jonathan Barnes will help us understand the anaesthetic considerations for this patient group before Dr Steve Dorman and Dr Ben Wildblood will discuss the latest evidence around TAVI including patient selection and how outcomes for this approach compare with other methods of aortic valve repair.

This year, we have also dedicated a session to perioperative and rehabilitation considerations in vascular surgery. Approaches and decision-making in the management of acute and chronic limb-threatening ischaemia are often complex and time-pressured. Rachel Sam will provide an update around the approach to the patient with a critically ischaemic limb. In 2024, 68% of above knee amputations and 54% of below knee amputations performed in the UK were for patients over 65 years. The older amputee may face additional challenges in their post-operative recovery and rehabilitation compared to younger people living with limb loss. We are excited to welcome Jodie Spyrou to explore specific rehabilitation considerations for these patients.

We will have the opportunity to hear the latest updates from the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit and also the key findings from the SNAP3 observational cohort study examining the impact of frailty, multimorbidity and post-operative delirium on older people following surgery.

Have a look at the programme for details of all the sessions. Don’t forget to make use of the networking opportunities and poster viewing time too. We look forward to seeing you there! Find out more about the conference and register here.
