BGS responses to external consultations

The BGS regularly responds to  external consultations by the UK government and those of the devolved nations that relate to older people's health, social care and wider issues, such as workforce. On this page you can find copies of our responses to recent consultations.

2026

Supporting people with frailty outside hospitals inquiry  

In January 2026, the BGS Healthcare in the Community Group submitted evidence to the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee's inquiry into supporting people with frailty outside hospitals.

Dementia strategy for Wales

In April 2026, the BGS Wales Council submitted evidence to the Welsh Government's consultation on its draft dementia strategy for Wales 2026 to 2036. 

2025

Palliative care strategy for Scotland

In January 2025, BGS Scotland Council and the BGS End of Life Care SIG responded to the Scottish Government's consultation on the draft national palliative care strategy.

Assisted dying bill  

In February 2025, the BGS submitted written evidence to the House of Commons committee considering the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life Bill).

Hospital discharge in Wales inquiry

In February 2025, the BGS Wales Council submitted evidence to the Senedd Local Government and Housing Committee inquiry into the role of local authorities in hospital discharge.

Evaluation of palliative care in England

In March 2025, the BGS End of Life Care SIG submitted evidence to the Health and Social Care Select Committee's Expert Panel evaluation into palliative care in England.

Palliative and end of life care commission 

In April 2025, the BGS End of Life Care SIG submitted evidence to the independent Palliative and End of Life Care Commission.

Pensioner poverty inquiry 

In April 2025, the BGS Policy and Communications Committee submitted evidence to the Work and Pensions Select Committee inquiry into pensioner poverty.

Medical education review

In May 2025, the BGS Education and Training Committee responded to the first stage of NHS England's Medical Education Review.

Healthy ageing inquiry 

In August 2025, the BGS Policy and Communication Committee submitted evidence to the Health and Social Care Select Committee Inquiry into Healthy Ageing.

Wales competence framework for palliative and end of life care 

 In Summer 2025, the BGS Wales Council commented on the draft All-Wales Competence Framework for Palliative and End of Life Care.

Scotland polypharmacy prescribing guidance 

In September 2025, the BGS Scotland Council, Medicines Optimisation SIG and Pharmacy Professionals Group responded to a Scottish Government consultation about polypharmacy.

Palliative and end of life care recommendations

In September 2025, the BGS Policy and Communications Committee and the BGS End of Life Care SIG provided recommendations to the Department of Health and Social Care on how to improve palliative care and end of life care.  

Men's health strategy for England

In September 2025, the BGS Policy and Communications Committee submitted evidence to the Department of Health and Social Care's consultation on the development of a Men's Health Strategy.

NHS workforce plan

In November 2025, the BGS Workforce and Education and Training Committees responded to the Department for Health and Social Care consultation about the upcoming workforce plan.

2024

Ageing and frailty standards for Scotland 

In June 2024, BGS Scotland Council responded to Healthcare Improvement Scotland's consultation on the ageing and frailty draft standards. 

Cost of inaction on social care  

In December 2024, the BGS Policy and Communications Committee provided written evidence to the Health and Social Care Select Committee's inquiry into the cost of inaction on social care.

2023

Assisted dying inquiry

In January 2023, the End of Life Care and Ethics and Law SIGs responded to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee's inquiry into assisted dying and assisted suicide.

Prevention inquiry 

In February 2023, BGS responded to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee's initial call for evidence for their inquiry into prevention. This initial stage asked for proposals of what the inquiry should focus on.

Representations for spring budget

In February 2023, BGS responded to HM Treasury's call for representations for the Spring Budget.

Labour party national policy forum 

In March 2023, BGS contributed to the Labour Party's National Policy Forum which feeds into the party's manifesto drafting process.

Supporting people with chronic conditions inquiry 

In May 2023, the BGS Wales Council responded to the first stage of the Senedd Health and Social Care Committee's inquiry into supporting people with chronic conditions.

Integration of primary and community care 

In Spring 2023, the BGS Community and Primary Care Group responded to an inquiry held by the House of Lords Integration of Primary and Community Care Committee.

The rights of older people inquiry

In October 2023, BGS responded to the House of Commons Women and Equalities Select Committee's inquiry into the rights of older people. 

Commissioner for older people in Scotland 

In October 2023, the BGS responded to the Scottish Parliament's consultation on a draft proposal for a bill to establish an independent commissioner to promote and safeguard the rights and interests of older people in Scotland. 

2022

Northern Ireland advance care planning policy 

In February 2022, the BGS Northern Ireland Council and the End of Life Care SIG responded to the Northern Ireland Assembly's consultation into the introduction of a nationwide advance care planning policy.

Mental health inequalities in Wales inquiry 

In February 2022, the BGS Wales Council responded to the Senedd Health and Care Committee's inquiry into inequalities in the provision of mental health care.

Scotland's health and social care strategy for older people 

In June 2022, the BGS Scotland Council responded to the Scottish Government's consultation into the development of a Health and Social Care Strategy for Older People.

Virtual ward and UCR capabilities framework

In July 2022, the Education and Training Committee responded to NHS England's consultation into a new capabilities framework for virtual wards and urgent community response services.

Introducing ICSs

In October 2022, BGS responded to the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee's inquiry into the introduction of Integrated Care Systems in England.

2021

Age Friendly Wales

In March 2021, the BGS Wales Council responded to the Welsh Government's consultation on creating an Age Friendly Wales.

COVID-19 vaccinations in care homes

In May 2021, BGS responded to the Department of Health and Social Care's consultation into mandatory COVID vaccinations in care homes. Please note that this consultation was conducted in May 2021 and the BGS response reflects the situation at that time.

Increasing prescription charges

In August 2021, BGS responded to the Department of health and Social Care's consultation into increasing the age at which people become eligible for free prescriptions.

Health and social care workforce planning

In October 2021, the Education and Training Committee responded to Health Education England's consultation on a strategic framework for the health and social care workforce.

Impact of COVID-19 on death, dying and bereavement inquiry

In November 2021, the End of Life Care SIG responded to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hospice and End of Life Care's inquiry into the lasting impact of COVID-19 on death, dying and bereavement. 

National Care Service for Scotland

In December 2021, the BGS Scotland Council responded to the Scottish Government's consultation into the development of a National Care Service.

Hospital discharge inquiry

In December 2021, the BGS Wales Council responded to the Senedd Health and Care Committee's inquiry into the issues surrounding hospital discharge.

2020

Post pandemic NHS and social care inquiry

In April 2020, BGS responded to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Select Committee's inquiry into post pandemic NHS and social care. Please note that this inquiry was conducted in April 2020 and the BGS response reflects the situation at that time.

Access to COVID testing in Scotland

In June 2020, the BGS Scotland Council responded to the Scottish Parliament's consultation on access to COVID testing. Please note that this consultation was conducted during June 2020 and the BGS response reflects the situation at that time.

Science, technology and healthy living inquiry

In September 2020, BGS responded to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee's inquiry into Ageing: Science, Technology and Healthy Living.

Lessons learned from COVID inquiry
