Meet the Falls and Bone Health SIG Committee

Step into action with the BGS Falls and Bone Health SIG: Where passion meets practice (and prevention!)

Are you fired up about preventing falls, boosting bone health, and helping older adults stay strong, steady, and independent? So are we…and we’re doing something about it.

The Falls and Bone Health Special Interest Group (SIG) is where clinicians, researchers, and educators unite to turn evidence into action and fragility into strength. We’re a vibrant, multidisciplinary community driving real change in falls and fracture prevention.

Meet the all-star line-up leading the charge:

Dr Alasdair MacRae (Chair)
Consultant in Orthogeriatrics & Falls Reduction Medicine. From local care to national coordination, Alasdair brings big vision and even bigger impact. As Chair of the SIG (and Chair of the National Falls Prevention Coordination Group), he’s all about education, empowerment, and mobility that lasts a lifetime.

Dr Lisa Alcock (Secretary)
Cutting-edge gait researcher at Newcastle University. Lisa is uncovering how and why we fall, and then translating it into smarter, more targeted prevention (no pressure!). She also represents Europe on the International Society for Posture and Gait Research.

Professor Dawn Skelton
Professor of Ageing and Health at Glasgow Caledonian University, and a world-renowned expert in exercise and rehab. Co-author of the World Falls Guidelines, Dawn has been setting the pace (and raising the bar) since 2005.

Ceri Thomas
Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Orthogeriatric Care, Ceri is on the frontline across Wales. With a passion for teaching and a hands-on approach to frailty and falls, she is turning clinical knowledge into measurable outcomes.

Dr Faye Wilson
Consultant Orthogeriatrician and hip fracture lead in Sunderland. From the ward to the Whitehall radar, Faye is shaping policy and practice alike, through the Falls and Fragility Fracture Audit Programme (FFFAP), the Fragility Fracture Network UK, and the BGS Clinical Quality Committee.

Sam Olden
Consultant Practitioner in Frailty and Rehabilitation. Sam is bringing it home by championing community-based, person-centred care. From blood pressure in frailty to integrated rehabilitation models, he is turning big ideas into better patient journeys.

Jodi Ventre

A Falls Prevention researcher at the University of Manchester, soon to become a Research Fellow at the University of Bradford (January 2026). Passionate about stopping falls before they happen, she specialises in primary prevention, finding smart, proactive ways to protect older adults long before injuries occur. She is especially intrigued by the psychology of falling: how worries about falling take root, and how those worries ripple through daily choices, confidence, and independence of older adults. Jodi also brings her expertise to the global stage as a member of the World Falls Guidelines international working group focused on concerns about falling.
