BGS announces EAMA grant award winners for 2024-2026

12 July 2023

The European Academy for Medicine of Ageing is an advanced postgraduate course in geriatric medicine designed to inspire and develop future leaders in academic geriatrics and older people’s healthcare across Europe. It is a dynamic, collaborative multi-faceted course that runs over two years. The purpose of the course is to nurture geriatricians in European countries in academic excellence, provision of geriatric care, teaching and leadership.

As part of the Society’s grants and prizes offer, the BGS gives members the opportunity to apply for EAMA funding. We are delighted to announce that this year's award winners are BGS members Dr Natalie Cox and Dr Rebecca Winter.

They will join the new course starting in January 2024 and  will be writing a report on their experience which will be published in the BGS Newsletter, AGENDA, and on the BGS Blog. Read previous award winner Dr Carly Welch’s BGS blog here and previous award winner Dr Mary Ní Lochlainn's BGS blog here. Carly and Mary recently graduated from the Academy (June 2023).

Dr Natalie Cox commented:

"I am thrilled to be given the opportunity by the BGS to attend EAMA after hearing from previous attendees what a fantastic experience it is.

"I completed my PhD last year exploring influences on appetite and anorexia in ageing and have recently been appointed to become a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine.

"The course therefore comes at a perfect time for me to learn from and develop connections with colleagues across Europe, to expand my knowledge around ageing and pursue my research interest in appetite and nutrition in later life.

"I am so grateful to the BGS for supporting me to attend and I look forward to sharing my experience with the membership. You can also follow my journey on Twitter @NJCoxGeriDoc.”

Dr Rebecca Winter commented:

"I am so excited to attend EAMA. I have had the pleasure of working at the BGS with previous attendees and heard such amazing things.

"I have very recently been appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and a consultant in Brighton, following completion of my MD exploring Frailty in undergraduate education.

"I am in the early stages of my research, with lots of enthusiasm and ambition to build on our understanding of frailty in undergraduate medical education and ways to improve teaching, curriculum design and assessment, as well as linking with workforce planning in our specialty. I have recently been appointed as a member of the BGS Education and Training Committee for Undergraduate Education and am involved in the design and development of the new BGS Undergraduate Curriculum.

"This course is very timely therefore, enabling me to develop closer links with colleagues in Geriatric Medicine across Europe and to share ideas and work collaboratively to improve medical education. I am incredibly grateful to the BGS for their support and encouragement and look forward to sharing gems of what I have learned with others via @rebeccawinter27, the BGS Blog and in AGENDA!
