Dr Victoria O'Brien

Co Chair, Trainees Council

I am an ST5 Registrar in Thames Valley Deanery currently working at the Royal Berkshire hospital in Reading.

I joined the Trainees Council as the education and training rep during the pandemic; keen to advocate for colleagues at a time when training was being delivered in new virtual ways and opportunities to meet other trainees were more limited. In this role I built resources for trainees on the new curriculum, set up a national network of local training reps and helped to organise a national Quality Improvement Day aimed at inspiring the next generation of Geriatricians.

I’m the regional registrar representative for Thames Valley trainees and last year completed an OOPE as a National Medical Director Clinical Fellow working with CQC. Here I helped support the development of national strategy and policy, with a focus on driving improvement in workforce wellbeing and dementia care. I’m excited to bring these experiences to the chair role and together myself and Julianaa are committed to building the trainee community network, developing links with the MDT and creating engaging and accessible content to inspire our trainee workforce.

Why trainees should get involved with the committee

Joining the BGS Trainees Council is a fantastic opportunity to meet likeminded people, build new skills and share a passion for developing training. It provides a chance to have a voice which will benefit both trainees and our patients into the future.
