Emma Vardy

Emma Vardy (she/her) is a Consultant Geriatrician and Clinical Frailty lead at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation trust and is an Honorary Clinical Chair at the Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre at the University of Manchester.  She is the Ageing Specialty lead for the North West NIHR Clinical Research network and the NIHR GM Applied Research Collaboration health ageing theme deputy lead.  She chair for regional North West BGS committee and is also a BGS Research and academic committee member, as well as Senior Editor for the society journal Age and Ageing.  Professor Vardy has a long advocated for women doctors to thrive, receive equal recognition for skills and achievements, and have opportunity to lead at all stages of their career.  She is a member of the Medical Women’s Federation and the Fawcett Society and interviewed Professor Gillian Mead for the first episode of the Women of the BGS series.  Professor Vardy has worked all of her career in the North of England and often in areas of higher deprivation, has worked with a number of patient/carer groups, and is keen the BGS work to reduce inequality in terms of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, deprivation and chronic condition.  This latter area is pertinent in relation to her work for and with people with dementia and carers and also having a daughter with a rare long-term condition.
