Campus for Ageing and Vitality, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 5PL

There is growing recognition of the need for research into ageing syndromes such as multimorbidity, frailty and sarcopenia. Geriatricians routinely manage such syndromes and should therefore play an important part in carrying out this research, and in translating its findings into clinical practice.

At the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre we bring together experimental medicine expertise in five areas: dementia, liver disease, musculoskeletal disease, neuromuscular disease and skin and oral disease. The Newcastle BRC is the only one in the country with an over-arching theme of ageing and long-term conditions and which is led by an academic geriatrician, Avan Sayer.

This is an opportunity for Geriatricians in the region (Consultants and StRs) to network: both those currently active in research and those who would like to find out more. We have organised a series of short talks that we hope will stimulate discussion, including:

Introduction to the BRC and Academic Geriatric Medicine

Avan Sayer, Professor of Geriatric Medicine & Director NIHR Newcastle BRC

Combining clinical training and research

Richard Dodds, Honorary Consultant in Geriatric Medicine and Clinical Fellow, and

Becky Wiseman, Consultant Geriatrician and Training Programme Director

Clinical trials to improve care of patients with ageing syndromes

Miles Witham, Academic Geriatrician and Professor of Trials with Older People

Training opportunities
from the BRC

Ellen Tullo, Geriatrician and Training Lead, NIHR Newcastle BRC

Opportunities to further develop integrated academic training

Suba Thirugnanasothy and Becky Wiseman, Training Programme Directors for Geriatric Medicine
