Vacancies: BGS Workforce Committee
The BGS is establishing a new Workforce Committee to drive forward our work to support retention, recruitment, development and support of those delivering healthcare for older people. The Committee will be led by Vice President Workforce, Dr Amit Arora. This call is for BGS members to volunteer to be part of the Committee.
As outlined in the BGS Strategic Plan 2023-26, workforce is one of the Society’s five strategic aims. The Committee will aim to support recruitment, retention and development initiatives that increase numbers of specialists in the care of older people and help existing staff to have the appropriate skills and support to deliver good care for older people in the right place at the right time. It is intended that by 2026, we will have worked with others to address the workforce crisis by helping to increase the size and skill base of the specialist workforce delivering care for older people, and by contributing to action on the workforce needed to provide healthcare to an ageing population. This is an exciting opportunity for BGS members in the four nations from across the multidisciplinary team and working in different care settings. It is particularly important at this time of crisis in the NHS to address workforce issues in a sustainable way, after years of under-investment.
The committee will report to the BGS Trustee Board on a quarterly basis and will work closely with other relevant BGS committees, such as the Education and Training Committee and the Policy and Communications Committee. The committee will have clearly defined objectives and outputs, which all committee members will be expected to contribute to. The committee will meet four times a year (March, June, September and December) initially via Teams. Membership of the committee is undertaken on a voluntary basis (although travel expenses will be paid for any meetings which take place at the Society’s London office).
If you are interested in contributing to the Committee, please read its draft terms of reference. We are looking to fill various different posts on the Committee, so please consider what you could offer. You must be a BGS member to be on the Committee.
