Chair: Job Description
  • Chairing the Nurse and AHP Council committee meetings four times a year. This involves planning agendas, coordinating with the BGS Secretariat on meeting arrangements, ensuring discussion of issues affecting Nurses and AHP’s within geriatric medicine, delegating tasks to office-bearers and committee members and overseeing follow-up outputs.
  • Serving as a charity Trustee on the BGS Board of Trustees This involves attending four Board meetings per year and working with the President, BGS Office Bearers, other trustees and the BGS staff to guide the strategic direction of the Society and provide governance.
  • Maintaining communications (via newsletters and electronically) Nurse and AHP members of the BGS with the assistance of other members of the Nurse and AHP Council and BGS staff, and reporting back to the BGS on the activities of the Nurse and AHP Council.
  • Providing input to the national BGS Spring and Autumn meetings.
  • Encouraging Nurse and AHP trainees to join the BGS and to be proactive members; and acting as an ambassador to promote the BGS and its work.
Representation at meetings
BGS Nurse and AHP Council (4 x per year), BGS Board of Trustees (4 x per year), BGS conferences (2 x per year).
Time commitment
Attending meetings in London requires 8 days including travel. There is also time needed for reading documents and communication with the BGS office team. This equates to approximately an additional 4 days per year spread over the 12 months and is on the whole by telephone or via electronic communication. There is an expectation to attend either the Spring or Autumn conference either for the full 3 days or at a minimum for 1-2 days. The role of chair provides opportunities for interactions with the media and this tends to be ad hoc and can account for 1-2 days per year.
Deputy Chair: Job Description
  • Act as an ambassador to promote the BGS and its work.
  • Deputise, as required, and support the Chair of the Nurse and Allied Health Professions (AHP) Council in fulfilling their role (e.g. in the Chair’s absence Chair the Nurse and AHP Council meetings)
  • Engage and maintain active communications (via newsletters and electronically media) with the wider body of Nurse and AHP members of the BGS.
  • Respond to and report back on actions and requests made by the Chair of the Nurse and AHP Council on Council delegated tasks and activities. .
  • Providing input to the national BGS Spring and Autumn meetings.
  • Encourage Registered Nurses, Nursing Associates, AHPs and students to join the BGS and to be proactive members.
Representation at meetings
BGS Nurse and AHP Council (4 x per year).
Time commitment

Meetings - 1 day 4 x a year
Conferences up to 5 days a year (presenter and attending)
Additional reading and writing, emails - e.g. a blog, an article a year, 6 hours a month.
