‘Through the visor’ – new report reflecting on multidisciplinary experiences of the COVID-19 first wave

The BGS has published a report from a survey of its members describing the experiences of working through the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. With respondents representing over twenty different professions working in acute, community and primary care, it is believed to be the only survey capturing the full breadth of multidisciplinary health professionals’ experiences caring for older people across the four nations.

BGS statement on the end of discharge funding

18 February 2021

The British Geriatrics Society welcomed the announcement in August last year of new funding of £588 million to support the health and social care needs of people being discharged from hospital for up to six weeks. This support must now become standard and funding must be available for this through NHS baseline funding.

BGS statement in response to NHS White Paper

The British Geriatrics Society welcomes plans outlined in the NHS White Paper to reduce bureaucracy and increase integration across health and social care. While legislation will not remove all of the current barriers to integration, it will help to ensure that older people are able to access the health and care services that they need.

Frailty predicts adverse outcomes in older adults admitted with trauma

Trauma is becoming a geriatric specialty, with the majority of major trauma admissions now adults over 65 years.  Injury severity in these older adults is comparable to that of younger patients, yet mortality is far higher.
